Job Purpose
The Bakery Assistant supports the daily operations of the bakery by preparing ingredients, maintaining a spotless kitchen environment, packaging finished goods, and assisting with basic baking tasks. This role is vital for ensuring high-quality production, strict food safety compliance, and efficient workflow.
Key Responsibilities
Ingredient Prep & Scaling: Accurately measure, weigh, and sift ingredients (flour, sugar, yeast, etc.) according to recipes. Prep fillings, glazes, and toppings.
Production Support: Assist the baker with mixing, kneading, shaping, and rolling dough or batter. Monitor oven timers and temperatures as directed.
Sanitation & Cleanliness: Wash mixing bowls, utensils, trays, and heavy equipment. Clean and sanitize workstations, counters, and floors continuously to meet health codes.
Inventory & Stocking: Unload ingredient deliveries, rotate stock using the FIFO (First In, First Out) method, and report low inventory levels to the manager.
Packaging & Display: Allow baked goods to cool completely, then slice, package, label, and price items correctly. Ensure front-of-house display cases look fresh and appealing.
Requirements:
Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy loads (often up to 50 lbs bags of flour) and stand, bend, and move for the duration of an 8-hour shift.
Early Bird Mentality: Willingness to work unconventional hours, including very early mornings (e.g., 3:00 AM or 4:00 AM starts), weekends, and holidays.
Attention to Detail: Precision in measuring ingredients—baking is a science where small mistakes throw off the chemistry.
Food Safety Knowledge: Understanding of basic food hygiene practices (a food handler's permit is usually required).
Teamwork: Ability to take direction well, communicate clearly, and work fast in a high-pressure environment.
